Pragmatism and Inferentialism∗

چکیده

Although Brandom does not go so far as to say that a pragmatist attitude to the relation between semantics and pragmatics requires an inferentialist semantics, his motivating arguments strongly suggest that a pragmatist ought to be an inferentialist. In what follows, I discuss the connections between Brandom’s pragmatism and his inferentialism. I’ll argue that pragmatism, as Brandom initially describes it—the view that “semantics must answer to pragmatics”—does not favor an inferentialist approach to semantics over a truth-conditional one. I’ll then consider whether inferentialism might be ∗I am grateful to members of my Spring 2006 seminar onMaking It Explicit for helping me work through this material. A Brandom-ian view of Reinforcement Learning towards strong-AI

The analytic philosophy of Robert Brandom, based on the ideas of pragmatism, paints a picture of sapience, through inferentialism. In this paper, we present a theory, that utilizes essential elements of Brandom’s philosophy, towards the objective of achieving strong-AI. We do this by connecting the constitutive elements of reinforcement learning and the Game Of Giving and Asking For Reasons. Fu...

Inferentialism and Cognitive Penetration of Perception

Cognitive penetration of perception is the idea that what we see (hear, taste, etc.) is influenced by such “cognitive” states as beliefs, expectations, and so on. A perceptual belief that results from cognitive penetration may be less justified than a nonpenetrated one. Inferentialism is a kind of internalist view that tries to account for this by claiming that (a) experiences are epistemically...

Inferentialism, Logicism, Harmony, and a Counterpoint

Inferentialism is explained as an attempt to provide an account of meaning that is more sensitive (than the tradition of truth-conditional theorizing deriving from Tarski and Davidson) to what is learned when one masters meanings. The logically reformist inferentialism of Dummett and Prawitz is contrasted with the more recent quietist inferentialism of Brandom. Various other issues are highligh...

Harmonic Inferentialism and the Logic of Identity

Inferentialism claims that the rules for the use of an expression express its meaning without any need to invoke meanings or denotations for them. Logical inferentialism endorses inferentialism specifically for the logical constants. Harmonic inferentialism, as the term is introduced here, usually but not necessarily a subbranch of logical inferentialism, follows Gentzen in proposing that it is...
